There are various benefits in tournament participation. One would be self-growth.
Self-growth is the process of discovering and developing who you are. It’s an individual journey, yet it’s accomplished by yourself and with others. There are many ways to obtain growth and inspiration is found all around. Purpose is born within, and through interaction, new aspirations form. Entering the tournament won’t stifle my growth, but not trying will keep me in my place. Do I not want to know what else I can do? Maybe I’ll find example in others on how to improve.
Depending on individual purpose, growth is achieved by helping others. As long as you’re giving to grow, you’re collecting more to share. Competing isn’t only about making others proud, it’s practicing who you are so you can grow greater. I want a full experience. I’m adding my kata so everyone in my ring gains a better experience. Without competition, it’s hard to exceed our limit. Sometimes, the boost required is received by pushing others to do their best. Contributing what you have for others offers inspiration and opportunity to lead, even if you don’t feel ready.
Should you ever realize that getting first place isn’t possible right now, don’t turn away from the opportunity to grow. Winning isn’t for everyone every time. Recognize your loss and create a new goal. This tournament wasn’t about being number one, it was about doing my best so I can assess my progress. Maybe next time, I will get farther in my kata.
Taking time to observe others also adds to self-growth. It liberates you to compare to others in a different sense. You’re watching to gather inspiration, instead of competing to be number one, and you’re creating new goals. If I could perfect what I know now, maybe I could pick up that style one day. Maybe they’d be willing to advise me.
So, to everyone considering tournament participation – Come on out, join and grow! Express who you are and let it all flow! Aren’t you a success accomplishing your goals? Wouldn’t it be a comfort relating to others, even if they’re of a higher rank? Isn’t it a success simultaneously contributing to others and yourself?

All bosses have a job to do: planning, scheduling, making sure you achieve your goals so that they can achieve theirs, projects, presentations, managing staff, and so on.
