In Canada, our winters are generally cold; in some places colder than others! But as Canadians we have learned to embrace the cold and make it part of our everyday lives and routines. For those who are active and enjoy being outdoors, the winter should be no exception. Here are five different ways you can stay active with outdoor winter fitness activities.
Hiking
Some of the most beautiful settings available in Canada, especially in Ontario, are found in the winter months. Taking a winter hike down a scenic trail can reveal wildlife, plant life or simply the beauty and stillness of your surroundings. Try to stick to known hiking pathways to avoid getting lost or crossing paths with a snowmobile track. It’s always best to wear reflective clothing when hiking in wooded areas to make yourself visible to any possible on-comers.
Snowboarding/Skiing
For the more adventurous winter enthusiast, snowboarding and skiing are anticipated all year round! Snowboarding and skiing both provide an excellent core and leg workout and will give you thrills that are unlike anything else. It’s amazing how clear and free you can feel while effortlessly gliding down a slope at top speeds, and who would imagine that it’s a great workout too.
Skating
Nothing gets your heart pumping like a skating session on an outdoor rink. In winter months skating rinks seem to pop up in parks, backyards, and frozen lakes and are an excellent source of exercise. Skating can be done leisurely or at a fast pace. Whatever your comfort levels are for skating, get out and enjoy it while working up a sweat.
Jogging
Have you ever been driving and see joggers out on a cold winter morning breathing out intense amounts of steam? Well those are dedicated joggers and should be commended on a daily basis. Jogging in the cold can be a great way to work out and really freshen up your body and mind. Breathing in the refreshing cold air while snowflakes dance around your face is the truly Canadian way to go for a jog. Remember to always wear reflective clothing so cars can see you and to stick to paths that you know are free of ice to avoid slip and falls.
Biking
Barring any ice or snow storms, biking in the winter can be a preferable mode of transportation. While cars need to be shovelled out and warmed up, bikes can generally just be ready to go. Sticking to proper bike trails and always following the rules of the road are important tips to remember for winter biking as poor road conditions increase the chance of accidents. Always remember to wear reflective clothing and never mount your bike without your helmet. Stay off the roads on really icy or snowy days.
Don’t let the cold winter months ruin your fitness plans! Get out there and enjoy some outdoor fitness this winter.
