Fear has the ability and power to control and hinder our actions like nothing else. The word fear has a variety of different definitions for each individual, and often we may not even be aware of its presence idling in the background of our mind. Fear paralyzes and holds us back from tackling those hurdles in life that inhibit our ambitions and diminish our dreams. But where there’s fear, there’s power. This month during our Give Strong theme, we encourage you to give strongly to yourself by tackling your fear through the power of martial arts.
Tackle the Fear Within
It has been said time and again that the only person we are ever in competition with is our self. The fear that is present within us on a daily basis manipulates and manifests its way through each thought and action we make. It is constantly changing. Whether it’s anxiety, lack of motivation, nervousness, confusion, or doubt, this emotion requires a constant battleground where you must continuously identifying it and knock it down. First and foremost, in order to achieve this, you must simply want something more than you fear it.
The Power of Martial Arts
The tradition of martial arts can help you achieve this. Through the power of discipline, motivation, endurance and strength, you can identify and release this destructive emotion. Since karate focuses on developing strength of both body and mind, it provides a platform for identifying the ways in which fear manifests itself within each individual. Through deep breathing exercises that teach each student the power of intention, focus and being centred, we can recognize the effects of internal fear, and try to overcome.
Instant Action
The physical nature of martial arts is based on the principles of self-defence and learning how to adapt and counter attack movements of the body. Through great discipline and focus, students develop purpose and ambition. By honing in on each technique, it eventually becomes a responsive and natural instinct. So rather than waiting for something to occur, you can instinctively think and act all within an instant. And this means addressing your fears as well.
Both confidence and competence are essential factors that are instilled throughout each method of martial arts. They are the pillars that are continuously built upon each and every time a student steps onto the mat, and even more so, when they step out into the world. The power of being able to stay grounded on two feet, to anticipate and instinctively know that you have the ability to protect and defend yourself, permeates throughout each and every area of your daily life. Conquering your fears requires discipline, focus and strength of both body and mind, and the practice of martial arts is one of the best ways for you to attain this.
